Saint Kevin’s Reserve Division 2 League Final V Kilcock Sunday 10th July 2016

45754ab1-f6e3-46b5-a13e-ad5ea63aa25a

Sunday 10th July 2016 saw Saint Kevin’s take on Kilcock in the Reserve Division 2 League final in Saint Conleth’s park, Newbridge. Saint Kevin’s had the worst possible start with Kilcock one goal and a point to nothing ahead after only eight minutes. However in the ninth minute Brian Dunne got Kevin’s first score – a goal from a long range ball that looked like it was going over before dipping and finding the back of the net. From there despite a few missed frees Kevin’s dominated play adding two more goals from Jamie Kenna before going in at the break 3-4 to 1-2 up.

After the break Kilcock brought it back to a six point game with 15 minutes remaining however after a nervy spell and some fine Brian Elliot goalkeeping, Kevin’s saw out the game to win in the end 3-11 to 2-6.

Saint Kevin’s – Football Update July 2016

So as we’re heading towards the end of the leagues lets take a look at where the Saint Kevin’s First and Reserve teams are at the moment.

Let’s start with the closest game and that’s this Sunday at 3pm in Saint Conleths Park, Newbridge as we take on Kilcock in the Kildare North Reserve Division 2 League Final. It’s around 10 years since we were in a league final and around 20 years since we’ve won one. This year sees us going in on the back of some impressive results but a previous loss to Kilcock notes caution. “We’re all looking forward to the game following a wonderful season so far, our only defeat coming against our opponents on Sunday by 3pts in Kilcock. I think we have a great chance on Sunday on bringing home our first league title at this level in a long time. It should be a tight game but we’re confident of getting the job done.” said bainisteoir Kieran ‘Buster’ Mangan ahead of the game. The very best of luck to team and management this Sunday.

Next in the MD Sports Kildare Senior Football League, Division 2 we’re currently in second place (See below) and play Kilcock who are third placed on Saturday 15th of July away in Kilcock. The spoils to the winner of this crucial game is a spot in the league final against Clogherinkoe, a draw will mean that it will depend on the results from other games.

The winner of Division two gets a chance in a playoff against the fifth from the bottom team from Division one, and the second placed team gets a playoff against the division one sixth from the bottom.

This means potentially two teams from division two could get promotion. Noel Mooney Senior Bainisteoir Saint Kevin’s feels “That we’d have targeted the league final this year early on and we’re close to that and that gives us games against stronger teams before the next round of the championship as well”

Finally a note on next years (2017) Kildare Senior Football League, the league will be re-arranged as follows, Division 1 will consist of Eleven teams, (this will be a total reduction of five teams down from sixteen) and only two possible promotion spots from Division 2 this year. Division 2 will not only home these demoted five teams but will also be reduced to ten teams (so six teams will be demoted from Division 2). These smaller divisions will mean a much more competitive league competition with every game being important.
